The battle of letters and press releases between Barnes & Noble and Ron Burkle shows no signs of abating. Within hours following a B&N letter to shareholders yesterday that reiterated the retailer's belief that Burkle is planning to team with Aletheia Research & Management to take control of the company without paying a premium price, Burkle issued a statement calling the letter "ironic and hypocritical."

Two bookstores,one in the Washington, D.C. area, the other in Greater Boston, are slated to open within the next few weeks. Eileen McGervey is opening One More Page in Arlington, Va., while Leisa Ginsburg is opening A Novel Cafe in a 2,500-sq. ft. building dating from 1740 in Tewksbury, Mass.

Critics who dubbed Britain's ex-prime minister "Tony Blur" for his allegedly substance-free politics swaddled in gauzy PR won't have their minds changed by this nebulous memoir. Blair's brief for his "ground-breaking" New Labour platform reads like a marketing plan: it's all about middle-class "aspiration," "focusing on the developing tastes of consumers," and "modernization," the glossed-over particulars being a muddle of small-bore education, health-care and law-and-order initiatives.

Nonprofit Berkeley, Calif., press North Atlantic Books has launched a new imprint, Evolver Editions. The imprint is a collaboration between North Atlantic, which publishes books on alternative health and other subjects, and Evolver LLC, which publishes the online magazine Reality Sandwich, a place for writings on "psychic evolution."
